Governments come and go, but there is a perennial truth we all understand. Our liberty, safety, the right to practice our religions has been guaranteed by all those warriors who have fought ever since our Republic began. It is to these men and woman, often unknown by name, that we must now bow our heads in gratitude.
There is a duty to which all soldiers respond and in so doing they honor our country, they honor and protect all of us. They do not ask for thanks, but they do deserve respect. I was born at the cusp of the Second World War, six days after D-Day, the Allied invasion of Normandy. Occasionally I think how different our world we have been if Germans had won. We could have had concentration camps in the US. But the Allied forces did win, with the sacrifice of so many soldiers. And we can sleep comfortably knowing that this is the truth, we are protected by our men and woman in the US Armed Forces.
